Welcome Our New Co-Directors

After more than 17 remarkable years serving as the director of the Children’s Learning Institute at The University of Teas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), Susan Landry, Ph.D. stepped down as CLI’s director effective August 31, 2020, continuing in her faculty position. April Crawford, Ph.D. and Tricia Zucker, Ph.D., Associate Professors at CLI, assumed co-direction of the Institute on September 1, 2020.

Continually advancing research and programs designed to support children, families, and schools with the university for over 30 years, Dr. Landry originally joined UTHealth in 1984. A developmental psychologist, she is nationally and internationally known for research in early childhood development and education. Closer to home, her dedication and commitment to serving Texas children led to CLI being designated as the Texas State Center for Early Childhood Development in 2003 by Gov. Rick Perry. During her tenure, she stewarded more than $527 million in research grants, programs, and gifts, with CLI’s clinics and programs positively impacting more than 1.75 million children. Dr. Landry will continue at UTHealth in her faculty position at 50% effort, recently receiving a new grant from the National Institutes of Health, but also plans to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Building on Dr. Landry’s strong foundation and legacy as CLI’s founding director, selecting co-directors for the dynamic institute expands opportunities to continue amplifying CLI’s work and impacts. In this next chapter, Drs. Crawford and Zucker will continue advancing CLI’s research-to-practice model across research, clinical programs, and school- and family-based education programs.

April Crawford, Ph.D., joined UTHealth in 1999, earning her doctoral degree at the University of Houston in 2010. Dr. Crawford’s serves as CLI’s director of state initiatives and her research interests include interventions related to early childhood teacher professional development and coaching delivery, strategic program implementation, and public policy, with an emphasis on improving outcomes for at-risk communities.

Tricia Zucker, Ph.D., joined UTHealth in 2010 after earning her doctoral degree at the University of Virginia and completing a postdoctoral fellowship at CLI. Dr. Zucker’s research interests include interventions designed to address reading, language, and academic difficulties, with a focus on children who are at-risk for learning disabilities and English learners from birth through elementary grades.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Landry’s direction of CLI and her outstanding service to children, families, and schools during the past 17 years, and welcome Drs. Crawford and Zucker as CLI’s new co-directors. Across the state and nationally, CLI is well-known for delivery of research-based early childhood programs; CLI faculty and staff are looking forward to our next phase under the co-direction of Drs. Crawford and Zucker.
