TSR Celebrates 8th Annual Early Childhood Summer Institute

In June, more than 800 early childhood professionals from around the state joined together in Arlington for two and half days of learning, networking, and fun at CLI’s Texas School Ready Early Childhood Summer Institute! This unique conference is an exceptional professional development opportunity provided free of charge to Texas early childhood educators through funding by the Texas Education Agency. Known for its combination of presentations by both national research experts and experienced, hands-on trainers and coaches, the TSR Institute provides attendees with high-quality trainings to help them provide the best possible learning experiences for children in their classrooms.

This year’s Institute kicked off with a presentation by Dr. Becky Bailey of Conscious Discipline, who spoke on the four essential readiness ingredients every child needs.  After this opening keynote, participants had the freedom to choose from over 100 sessions, focused on a variety of topics including instructional strategies, classroom management, school leadership and administration, integrating technology into instruction, promoting diversity, and more. Participants also attended two additional general sessions: a plenary featuring the Children’s Learning Institute’s Founder and Director Dr. Susan Landry, who spoke on cognitive instruction for social and emotional development, as well as the closing session by Dr. Jean Feldman, who gave an interactive session showing how to use engaging songs and creative activities to help make teaching and learning fun.  This year we also celebrated the 15th anniversary of CLI and had a lovely reception sponsored by Lakeshore to honor CLI and Dr. Landry.

For more than a decade, the Children's Learning Institute at The University of Texas Health Science Center has implemented the Texas School Ready project as an early education approach that serves at-risk preschool-aged children through teacher professional development, child progress monitoring, and research-based curriculum. Texas School Ready and it’s technology platform, CLI Engage, now serves more than 20,000 teachers and 250,000 children each year.

Folded into the professional development arm of the project, the TSR Institute was established in 2011 to bring together professionals from diverse communities under a common goal: advancing the quality of our early education through exposure to the best research-to-practice methods. Since that time, the Institute has been held annually in various cities across the state to allow more people the opportunity to attend this free, high quality professional development event. All Texas early childhood educators and caregivers are welcome to register for the Institute, regardless of formal participation in the TSR project. In addition to free registration, TSR provides scholarships to help offset travel costs to Texas School Ready participants on a needs basis.

Details about the 9th Annual Institute will be available on our Institute website in Spring 2019. For more information on how to get involved in the Texas School Ready project, visit our website at texasschoolready.org.
