Rapid Letter Naming Assessment

RLNA ScreensThe Rapid Letter Naming Assessment measures a child's alphabet knowledge.

  • Flip the pages at least every three seconds. (This takes practice!)
  • Do not give any hints to the child.
  • Do not have the child name the letters from the handheld screen.
  • If the child says nothing, tap (incorrect button) and flip to the next page.
  • Tap and the program opens.
  • Check that the date and time are accurate. If they are not, tap them to set the correct date and time. (see tab 2 - Setting the Digitizer/Setting The Date & Time/Notes)
  • Tap to begin.
  • Select the appropriate class and time of year.
  • Tap a name to select a child to assess. (The name will become highlighted.)
  • Tap to begin assessment.
  • Review the materials and procedures on the handheld screen.
  • Tap to continue.
  • Read the directions to the child who is seated beside you.
  • Make sure the child understands the upcoming task.
  • Tap .
  • Turn to the appropriate starting page for the child.
  • Tap to start the 60 second timer.
  • Press or as the child responds to score the assessment.
  • Flip the letters to the child as fast as she can read them.
  • If the child takes more than 3 seconds on any letter, the Incorrect button will flash. If the child has not responded, score as incorrect and move on.
  • If the child gives the letter sound, or the name of the letter in a different language, you may ask the child, "What is the name of this letter in English (or Spanish)?" (Ask for letter name in the language of the assessment.)
  • Be careful not to spend more than 3 seconds on any one letter. The goal is to give the child a chance to name as many letters as possible in one minute.
  • When 60 seconds are up, tap to immediately see how many letters the child named correctly. The results screen appears.
  • RLNA Screens 2From the results screen, you can add notes about the assessment, edit or delete the assessment entirely.
  • Tap to record any observations about assessment. Did the child give letter sounds instead of letter names? Was she nervous? See Notes Screen under "tab 14 - Recording Observables".
  • Tap if you need to correct any responses. This allows you to review the answers you recorded for each letter and make any needed changes. Tap .
  • Tap if this assessment should not be submitted. You will be prompted to confirm this choice, then the assessment will be deleted. This should be done only if something happens to interrupt the assessment.
  • Tap to make the results final. You will not be able to make any changes after you press done. You will return to the class list screen.
  • After the BOY assessment period the palm automatically begins the RLN Assessment where you left off at the previous time period. The pop up on the handheld prompts you to start at the correct letter and page #.
    • Example: If a child identifies 25 letters total at the beginning of the year, you would be prompted to start the middle of year at letter "h", the 26th letter.
  • At each assessment period the palm automatically begins the RLN where you left off at the previous time period. The pop up on the handheld prompts you to start at the correct letter and page #.
    • Example: If a child answered 25 letters total at the beginning of the year, you would start the middle of year at letter "h" (#26).
    • After reaching "m" (#52), you loop back to the first letter "B") and proceed through the letters.
