Program Information

Our programs target both struggling students as well as students with grade level academic skills. We offer low tutor-to-student ratios (1:1 or 1:2). All intervention programs are evidence-based and have been identified as effective approaches to reading and math instruction. Based on assessment results and needs, a tailored instructional plan will be implemented using one or a combination of the following interventions.

Early Reading Skills (Grades 1-2 or struggling readers in Grades 3-4)
Sessions for Reading will focus on phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondences, word recognition, spelling, fluency and comprehension strategies.

Phonemic Awareness:

  • Phoneme (sound) discrimination in words
  • Phoneme (sound) segmentation and blending- separating sounds in words and putting sounds together in words
  • Spelling sounds

Letter-Sound Correspondences:

  • Targeted lessons focused on teaching letter names, sounds and symbols
  • Cumulative review
  • Assessments to determine mastery of letter names, sounds and symbols

Word Recognition and Spelling:

  • Instruction in both regular and irregular words
  • Strategies for sounding out words
  • Decoding unknown words with the six different syllable types

Fluency:

  • Practice word recognition strategies
  • Reading connected text
  • Repeated and timed readings

Comprehension:

  • Sequencing
  • Predicting
  • Story grammar
  • Sharing experiences related to topic
  • Main idea

Fluency (Grades 1-4)
Sessions for Fluency will focus on reading fluently on instructional leveled text.
Fluency:

  • Repeated readings
  • Timed Readings
  • Reading with expression
  • Reading accuracy
  • Word attack skills
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension

Comprehension (Grade 3 or students struggling with comprehension in Grade 4)
Sessions for Comprehension will focus on vocabulary, word work, comprehension activities and writing using chapter books. Sessions are designed for students who are reading at or above grade level, but struggle comprehending.

  • Definition match

Word Work:

  • Suffixes
  • Prefixes
  • Comparatives
  • Multiple meanings
  • Compound words
  • Homonyms
  • Similes
  • Possessives
  • Sorting syllable patterned words
  • Inflectional endings

Comprehension Activities:

  • Story grammar
  • Sequencing
  • Identifying  main events
  •  Identifying story problem
  •  Main idea
  •  Inference

Writing:

  • Writing process
  • Graphic organizer

Fluency:

  • Repeated readings
  • Timed readings

Math (Grades 1-4)
Sessions for Math will focus on math facts and word problems.

Word Problems:
