Background

Why reading skills and social skills?

The Texas School Ready!™ certification program uses the scores from the reading assessment given to kindergartners in almost every Texas school district. The TPRI and the Tejas LEE for Spanish speaking children are designed to know which children will read well and which children may need additional support.

Social skills are important to the success of children in kindergarten. Areas such as getting along with others and the ability to follow directions are key to children being able to learn.

The Texas State Center is also currently working with the Texas Education Agency to identify an appropriate early math assessment to include in the certification system.
