CIRCLE

The Center for Improving the Readiness of Children for Learning and Education

Early Childhood Initiative

Currently in the state of Texas, many preschool age children do not have access to the type of early stimulation that will allow them to develop adequate language, cognitive, and social skills. Since children are entering Kindergarten without the skills necessary for learning to read or solve problems, one of CIRCLE's newest activities includes a new statewide early childhood initiative. During the 1999-2000 school year CIRCLE staff worked closely with the Texas Education Agency on activities that will enhance the quality of preschool education in Texas. These activities include: 1) Provide expert assistance to the Texas Center for Reading and Language Arts at the University of Texas at Austin in development of professional development modules for Early Childhood Education, 2) Deliver training to targeted early childhood programs, 3) Develop evaluation tools to assess the effectiveness of Head Start programs in language enrichment and preliteracy, 4) Establish a clearinghouse for quality program development, related scientific data, and resource material for early childhood programs. Funded by Texas Education Agency (9/1/99-8/31/00).
