Mary Ellen Holman, an educator for over 40 years, retired in 1992 having taught every grade except pre-K.  So it was a serendipitous confluence of events that led Ms. Holman back to teaching young children at A Plus Preparatory School‎, a childcare center in southwest Houston.. learn more

"I usually have students take the online assessments starting on the Monday after we finish a two-week chunk of instruction. They take the test in the mornings during the warm-up activity. I like the assessment, and it gives me a good quick read on how well students are retaining the vocabulary words."

“We have gotten an overwhelmingly large number of our parents giving us positive feedback (about the RAR program).  They are like ‘Oh the books are great.  It’s such a great selection of books.’ A lot of our parents were so surprised that there were a lot of African American books and they were really happy to see that. Some of the books are classics that the parents know from when they grew up, so that was cool…We are also getting a lot of parents who are taking their kids to the library now. - St. John’s Academy" learn more

"Our LCC, Local Campus Coach, is a beacon of light on our campus. She is always o offering support and encouragement in dark times. As a fairly new teacher I am incredibly thankful for her because I’ve had groups of students who struggled academically, and she always made it a point to send me to all the make-n-takes, summer trainings, or anything else she thought would be beneficial. When we got the directive to do centers, I was completely overwhelmed, but she patiently reassured me that this was going to be incredibly beneficial for all my students. I did it, but I dragged my feet, and that year we had tremendous growth. Third grade had a 90% passing rate on TAKS and 36 commended performances. Our grade level works very closely with her to ensure student success."

"I don’t know the words to describe how awesome the Reading Instruction Junction Manual is for all who receive it!!!! Never have I seen so much information compiled in such a user friendly manner. Of course, the visual person I am, this is perfect to travel through and find anything I need. I am sure that LCCs and teachers will find it beyond their wildest dreams. The time and effort you all spent on this will be greatly appreciated for years and years by educators in this state. This is one of your greatest if not the greatest tools since Reading First began. It is always such a pleasure to work and learn alongside each of you."

"If another mom was considering participating in this program, I would tell her that she should definitely do it, because it not only teaches her about her child, it helps her put into perspective goals that she needs to achieve to help her better herself for her and her child’s future."
