The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston includes 5 component schools (Dental Branch, Medical School, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, and School of Health Information Sciences) in addition to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS). The Health Science Center embraces a mission to advance the health of the people of the State of Texas, the nation, and our global community through educating compassionate health care professionals and innovative scientists and through discovering and translating advances in the social and biomedical sciences to treat, cure, and prevent disease now and in the future.

To fulfill this mission essential goals include the education of scientists in a diverse interdisciplinary academic community; the creation and evaluation of new knowledge through basic and applied research as it relates to disease prevention, treatment, and cure; and leadership in the scholarship of the biomedical sciences. These goals are fulfilled in large part by participation of nearly 200 Health Science Center faculty from component schools in the education and research training programs of the GSBS. The faculty offer state-of-the-art training in a wide range of contemporary biomedical science and translational research.
