The Director of Research for the Children’s Learning Institute, Dr. Paul Swank, discusses research and why it matters
Dear Friends,
Here at The Children’s Learning Institute, our mission is to ensure that every child is equipped to learn and able to excel. To achieve our mission, CLI uses a multidisciplinary approach to the study of children’s development and treatment of children’s learning differences. We accomplish this by utilizing a mix of clinical programs, parenting programs, classroom curriculum, teacher mentoring, and theoretical as well as applied research. Our major focus is translating research into practice through applied interventions in homes, schools, and clinics.

The Children’s Learning Institute Collaborates with The Harlem Children’s Zone
Harlem Children's Zone presented a two day conference, “Changing the Odds: Learning from the Harlem Children’s Zone Model.” The sold out conference attracted over 1,400 leaders from non-profit, community, government, and philanthropic organizations who wanted to learn more about HCZ's holistic model, which is breaking the cycle of generational poverty for thousands of children and families in Central Harlem.

Vocabulary and Early Reading: A conversation with Dr. Dennis Ciancio
Dr. Dennis Ciancio is an assistant professor and a developmental psychologist in the Children’s Learning Institute. His research includes intervention evaluation, early literacy development, and children's cognitive and socio-emotional development. Currently, Dr. Ciancio is investigating early literacy intervention and assessment in preschool and primary-grade children and quantitative methodology. Dr. Ciancio is a co-author of the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI), a classroom-based reading assessment for Kindergarten through Third Grades. The TPRI is used nationwide and by more than 95% of schools across Texas. He is responsible for the continued development and support of this instrument.
